Spy Who Loved Me (1977)

It’s interesting to realize that the big guy with metal teeth originally started out in a comedy with Gene Wilder.

This was the next movie in the James Bond series. Bond has to get back a macguffin that can track their submarines. He attempts to get it back but there is a Russian agent who is after the same thing and they keep getting in each other’s way while they try to retrieve it from this big guy named Jaws who killed the original guy that had it and took it himself. They eventually manage to get the macguffin, which wasn’t really that important anyway, because it doesn’t really tell them that much and they go to the beach where they use an under water car to spy on an underwater base and find out what they are up to.

There are a lot of problems with this movie and I’m not sure why some people consider this to be one of the better ones in the series since the plot is really dumb, there is hardly any action at all and most of it just sort of blends together for me. This movie does have a couple of saving things about it. The first is a pretty great chase scene that has them pursued by five different kinds of vehicles both in and out of the water.

The second is a pretty big finale at the end that has Bond save a bunch of navy guys, which leads to a big battle between them and the villains. Other than that this movie is a dud with me. It seems so incredibly flash in the pan and totally different from the previous movie in the series, which was pretty legitimate. Fortunately, the director of this movie would make up for things with the next one in the series, which might have been veering away from what they were going to do but I think still worked out pretty well.
